Smart Stormwater Solution
Pervious pavement and permeable interlocking concrete pavers are used in parking lots to help reduce the impacts of stormwater runoff in urban communities.
Pervious concrete pavement is a durable but porous concrete that contains less sand than conventional concrete. The final result is a solid, uniform pavement with a texture that looks like grey Rice Krispies squares that allows water to pass through. Permeable interlocking concrete pavement is comprised of a layer of concrete pavers placed on prepared bedding sand. The joints between the pavers are filled in with joint sand which also allows water to pass through it.
Both of these concrete products allow rainwater to seep into the ground, recharging groundwater levels and reducing stormwater runoff. They minimize the need for expensive retention ponds and other stormwater management devices. When rainwater is allowed to percolate into the ground, soil chemistry and biology can naturally treat the surface.
