The Cement Association of Canada (CAC), Portland Cement Association (PCA) and Cement Americas magazine acknowledged the achievements of Lehigh Cement in Edmonton, Alberta, as part of the 2010 Cement Industry Energy and Environmental Awards. The plant was a finalist in the Outreach category, which honors activities that strive to enhance community, employee and government relations. This was the second straight year the plant was honored in this category.
In 2009, Lehigh Cement continued to develop its community relations through several avenues including the Community Liaison Group and the Alberta Capital Airshed Alliance. Lehigh has worked for several years to develop an open and transparent relationship with members of the Alberta Environment, the City of Edmonton, five community leagues, and two neighboring industrial facilities. Lehigh is a founding member of the Alberta Capital Airshed Alliance in Edmonton and Lehigh’s representative is President of the Airshed. Lehigh also developed an annual Environmental Report Card that presents the plant’s environmental performance for the previous year and compares it to provincial and federal objectives.
“Cement companies take their responsibilities very seriously to ensure that their processes contribute to making their communities better places to live and work”, said Michael McSweeney, Cement Association of Canada President and CEO. “The award shows this commitment in action.”
The Cement Industry Energy & Environmental Awards honor activities conducted the previous calendar year that exemplify the spirit of continuous environmental improvement and support this spirit with action. The program is open to any cement manufacturing plant in North America. Judges for the award represent independent groups such as National ready Mix Concrete Association, US EPA-ENERGY STR, U.S. EPA Office of Policy, Economics and Innovation, Cement Association of Canada, Cement Americas magazine, U.S. Geological Survey, World Resources Institute and the World Wildlife Fund. The awards program was created in 2000 by the Portland Cement Association as part of its renewed environment and energy strategic plan for the cement industry.
